Collaborative Creativity: Lewis's Work Experience at WEDGE 💼

Since the inception of WEDGE Collective, we have worked with young people across many different projects. In fact, our first-ever project was a week-long entrepreneurship programme with a group of creative students at Bury College! Providing young people with valuable real-world experience and insights into the creative industry is something we’re passionate about, both as individuals and as a team.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting PLACED Academy graduate and soon-to-be Loughborough University graphic design student, Lewis, for 4 days of work experience with WEDGE. During his placement, spread across two consecutive weeks, Lewis spent time with Jodie, Abi and Emile, gaining experience on live projects, team collaboration and the inner workings of a creative agency.

Lewis worked closely with Jodie across a range of client briefs, produced some brilliant creative work and provided excellent input on projects and our quarterly WEDGE strategy meeting.

Big thanks to the team at Yeti for providing a tour around their wonderful studio space and sharing insights into their work too!

We sat down with Lewis to hear about his experience, and here’s what he had to say:

What attracted you to this internship/work experience opportunity?

I was interested to find what the creative industry would be like and gain new knowledge in the area. I wanted to learn more about the process of creating branding and how to interact with clients.

What has surprised you most about working in this industry?

I was surprised by how efficient the team at WEDGE are with their time. They have a very structured approach to managing their day and using their time effectively.

What projects or tasks have you enjoyed working on the most?

I really enjoyed working on Emile’s branding project. I also liked working on the initial sketches for a new client Jodie is working with. For both of these tasks I enjoyed starting from scratch and problem-solving to create a meaningful logo.

How do you think this experience has helped prepare you for your future career?

This experience has given me a foundational understanding of how to manage my time and approach different tasks.

Do you see yourself working in this industry after your work experience? Why or why not?

Yes, I see myself continuing in this industry, although I'm not entirely sure in what capacity yet. I think university will help me figure that out. I might start working in-house at an agency and then decide whether to go freelance or start my own business, like WEDGE have.

How would you describe the company culture here?

Collaborative creativity.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience?

The most rewarding part has been working with Jodie and Abi, as part of the team on a variety of tasks, whether big or small. I’ve become much more versatile over the course of this experience. I also really enjoyed visiting the studio at Yeti, which was completely unexpected. It was a very different and cool space, unlike anything I’ve seen before.

What’s one thing you’ll take away from this experience?

2 new friends!

Lewis’s enthusiasm and creativity were a great addition to the team and made our time together equally as inspiring for WEDGE!
